Water Meter Installation Guidelines
1. Meters can be
obtained only at the Water Building at 1298 1 8'i' St. SW, between
7 am and 3:30 pm. Please call first to make sure someone is
available by calling 546-5555 for an appointment. Within 24
hours after the service line has been in use. The meter must
be attached and operating. The meter is intended for
measuring potable, cold water in one direction only. The
meter must also be protected from inclement weather.
2. The meter and remote must go into the address assigned to
the meter when issued. Also: The meter shall be installed so
easy accessibility for future maintenance. Also shut off
valves need to be easily accessible.
3. Clean and flush the service line thoroughly on the inlet
side of the meter before installing the meter.
4. Suitable shut-off valves shall be installed adjacent to
both the inlet and outlet of the meter so service may be
shut off without undue inconvenience when the meter must be
removed.
5. Set meter with the arrow pointing with the flow the water
will be going.
6. To insure unrestricted flow of water through the meter,
use the proper size and type of gaskets. Connection should
be sufficiently tightened to seal. Don't over tighten. Do
not use pipe sealant, tape or putty on the meter spud
threads.
7. After the meter is installed, shut the outlet shut-off
valve. Open the inlet shut-off valve slowly until the meter
is full of water and there are no Leaks.
8. The touch pad, remote shall be installed by the electric
and or gas meter preferably on the side of the house or
business not less than 3 foot above dirt grade and not more
than 5 foot above dirt grade.
9. An installation diagram is available when picking up a
water meter which includes private meters installed after
the master meter.
10. Whoever installs the water meter, (owner, plumber, or
contractor) it is their responsibility to install or hire
someone to install the touch pads outside.
11. All meters and apparatus will need to be inspected by city staff before
an occupancy permit will be given out.
